DJ Cuppy isn’t Nigeria’s best artist but upcoming artists can learn a few points from the Disc Jockey turned artist.
DJ Cuppy entered the Music Scene as a Disc Jockey but transitioned into producing and creating music when she released “Green Light” featuring Tekno.
The twenty-seven-year-old has also released songs like “Vybe”, “Abena”, “Currency”, “Werk”, “Gelato”.
While the songs are nice but they did not achieve the same success her first Official single, “Green Light” achieved. Probably because Green Light was produced by Tekno and with the artist’s wealth of experience, it was highly impossible for the song not to be enjoyable.
DJ Cuppy isn’t the cream of the crop, she won’t even be on top 20 lists of good artists in Nigeria but it still doesn’t take away from the fact that her relentless and enthusiasm to do better makes up for her lack of artistic ability.
The Disc Jockey last year said that 80% of Nigerians don’t like her and probably it came from the fact that most of her songs had terrible reviews.
DJ Cuppy’s songs have been referred to as wack by some people who even include her fans and this is despite the fact that she features incredible artists like Sarkodie, LAX, Kwesi Arthur, Zlatan amongst others.
So the question is, why do DJ Cuppy’s songs receive terrible reviews despite its stars feature. Well, for a starter, from experience having a star on a song or movie doesn’t guarantee quality content.
Secondly, it takes a certain ability or talent to give a song depth. Take, for example, Tekno’s work on Greenlight. Tekno is a multi-talented artist who also does music production and songwriting. so it’s not surprising to see mix his magic and deliver a club banger.
While this article isn’t to focus on her songs but rather on DJ Cuppy’s personality and approach to music itself.
DJ Cuppy earlier in the year revealed that she would be dropping her debut album, “Original Copy“ this year and for many reasons, the album keeps getting delayed.
The album was previously announced to be an EP and DJ Cuppy involved fans in picking a name choice for the album.
Her involving her fans in the process shows how much she values the opinion of her fans which she calls “Cupcakes”.
While she was being distraught over the issue, fast-rising female act, Teni reached out to her and encouraged her to be steadfast and not to give up.
DJ Cuppy has managed to establish herself as Nigeria’s sweetheart due to her friendly and happy nature. She would be considered as one of Nigeria’s most trolled artist but her effortless way of dealing with trolling is quite a sight to behold.
DJ Cuppy is like a child on adrenaline, rarely takes offense to things, rarely holds grudges, and is willing to learn and grow.
This writer can’t wait for her forthcoming album to be released. These debut album would show if she has grown or gotten more creative with how she goes about music.
