The Nigerian musician and pioneer of Afrobeats, Fela Kuti, constructed a shrine for himself where he held performances and recorded music.
Due to Fela’s political involvement in the 1970s, the military government had this shrine, now known as the “Old Afrika Shrine,” demolished.
Then he relocated to Mushin’s Empire Hotel, also known as the Kalakuta Republic or the Afrika Shrine. As a result of repeated government raids, this was completely destroyed in 1977.
In honour of Fela’s passing, his son Femi Kuti erected a new Afrika Shrine in October 2000. Since then, it has become into a popular tourist destination for aficionados of Afrobeats worldwide.
The new shrine, which is located in the Alausa environment of Ikeja, Lagos State, houses some of the best art and musical performances in Lagos. It has become like home for Afro-beat lovers and has also served as a great location for emerging artists to shoot their videos and host their shows.
Here are some Nigerian music videos that were shot at the shrine:
Run My Race – Burna Boy (2013)
Prior to his performance in Felabration 2013 where he shocked the crowd by performing in his underwear, Burna Boy shot the video for Run My Race at The New Afrika Shrine.
He credits Fela, whom he has frequently cited as his role model, for providing the inspiration for the song, which was directed by Clarence Peters.
Therefore, he chose to film the video at the shrine. The video was able to depict both the shrine’s nightlife and the net where the female dancers perform.
Jaiye- Jaiye – Wizkid ft Femi Kuti (2013)
The accompanying video for Wizkid’s Jaiye Jaiye, which earned widespread acclaim, was shot at the new Afrika Shrine. The video, which was directed by Sesan, was nominated for a Nigerian entertainment award.
This video was able to depict both the stunning surroundings and scenes within the new Afrika Shrine. The video was released on October 26th, 2013.
Eruku Sa’Ye Po – Sean Tizzle (2015)
Sean Tizzle released the video for his song Eruku Sa’Ye Po on November 1st, 2015; it was filmed at The New Afrika Shrine.
The video included scenes from the annual festival as well as shots of the shrine’s exterior, the surrounding area, and street vendors.
Additionally, it provided a brief peek of the stage, which appeared slightly different because of the lighting effects that were added to the footage.
Manya – MUT4Y ft Wizkid (2017)
This music video, which was directed by Director Q and produced by MUT4Y, transported spectators to the centre of the new Afrika Shrine.
The visuals gave us a close-up view of practically every area of the shrine, including the artwork on the walls, the stage, and daily shrine activities like drink sellers selling drinks, talking drums, and traditional dancers moving to the music.
Several famous people appeared in the song video, including the Senegalese-American artist Akon.
Ma Lo- Tiwa Savage ft Wizkid (2017)
In 2017, Tiwa Savage dropped the video for her hit single ‘Ma Lo’ which features Wizkid and Spellz.
The song which is one of the tracks off her ‘Sugarcane’ album is a JM Films production, directed by Meji Alabi.
Fantasy- Niniola ft Femi Kuti(2020)
In 2020, Niniola released the music video for her infectious single “Fantasy,” featuring Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti.
The track, produced by Kel-P, is a sultry banger, featuring mellifluous vocals from Niniola, and groovy saxophone riffs and horn arrangements from Kuti.
The music video, directed by Sesan, takes place at New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, Nigeria and features colourful scenes and energetic dancers, wearing looks inspired by the late Fela Kuti’s all-female dance crew, the Kalakuta Queens.
According to Niniola, she used to watch videos of Fela Kuti and Femi Kuti, and she loved the music and also loved the way the dancers moved their waist and hips and collaborating with Femi Kuti and shooting at the Afrikan Shrine is a childhood dream come true.
