Wolves have announced and confirmed the signing of Joao Gomes from Flamengo, subject to a work permit and international clearance.

Wanderers have paid a reported £15 for the 21-year-old, who becomes Julen Lopetegui’s sixth signing.

The West Midlands team had been seeking the midfielder for the whole transfer window, and a deal looked to be on the of happening when Lyon entered the picture after Gomes underwent a medical at Molineux.

However, the 21-year-old was adamant about joining Wolves so he could play in the Premier League, and on Monday, they officially announced his signing after a “patient and determined procedure.”

Wolves said in a statement: “Wolves have secured the signing of highly rated Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes from Flamengo, subject to work permit and international clearance.

“After a patient and determined recruitment process, Wolves have made the 21-year-old Julen Lopetegui’s sixth acquisition of the January transfer window.

“Gomes landed in England on Sunday, before completing his introductions and medical tests, and put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months, adding to the old gold’s midfield department.”

Wolves, who outbid French team Lyon to capture Gomes, have the option of extending his contract by one more year, subject to obtaining a work visa and receiving international clearance.

For his local team, he has appeared in 86 league games, scoring once, and winning the Copa Libertadores in 2022.

Gomes, who made his professional debut in November 2020, also helped Flamengo win the Brazilian Serie A league championship and domestic cup.

Since Lopetegui assumed leadership, he has joined Mario Lemina, Pablo Sarabia, Matheus Cunha, Craig Dawson, and Daniel Bentley in travelling to Molineux.

With seven points out of a possible 15, Wolves have moved 17th in the Premier League, the relegation zone on goal differential.
