Brazil will be without talisman Neymar for the duration of the group stages, and versatile defender Danilo will also be out until the knockout stages.

On Thursday night, the Selecao defeated Serbia 2-0 to begin their group-stage campaign. Richarlison, a forward for Tottenham Hotspur, scored two vital goals, the second of which was among the tournament’s best overhead kicks after flicking the ball up.

Neymar didn’t play his best, but he spent the majority of the game getting collided with and fouled a lot. He was eventually replaced after 79 minutes due to an ankle injury.

The 30-year-old, who has spent significant amounts of the previous few years in the hospital, was momentarily seen sobbing on the sidelines as he worried that his most recent illness would be serious.

According to the Brazilian site Globo, Neymar and his teammate Danilo won’t continue to compete in the World Cup’s group stages and will instead try to make a comeback once the knockout rounds start.

Brazil will play the Group H runners-up on December 5 at Stadium 974 if they win Group G. If they place second, they will take on the Group H champions on December 6 at Lusail Stadium.

Brazil’s next match is on November 28 against Switzerland, and on December 2 they play Cameroon to complete the group stage.
