The team announced on Thursday that Argentine Jorge Sampaoli has been appointed as Sevilla’s new manager. Sampaoli replaces the fired Julen Lopetegui and has been given a contract through June 2024.

After being destroyed 4-1 at home by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage, Sevilla fired Lopetegui on Wednesday.

Sampaoli will working with the record-setting six-time champions, who have had a difficult start to the season with just one victory across all competitions.

Their worst start to a league season since being promoted back to the top flight in 2001 finds them in 17th place in with five points, one spot and one point above the relegation zone.

Furious supporters who had high hopes after Sevilla finished fourth last season after competing with for the title for the majority of the season have questions for the club’s board.

“Sevilla FC and Jorge Sampaoli have reached an agreement for the Argentine coach to become the new coach of the first team… He signed a contract until June 30, 2024,” the club said in a statement.

After guiding to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and Champions League qualification last season, Sampaoli left the club in July because he was dissatisfied with the club’s transfer activity.

Sampaoli, who led Chile to their first Copa America title in 2015, had a turbulent first stint at Seville in 2016-17.

With a club record 42 points in the first half of the season, Sevilla had a fantastic start and eventually finished fourth.

They reached the Champions League last 16 where they were eliminated by Leicester City.
