As the days go by, people are beginning to realize the power of social media and in the last decade, the use of social media has revolutionized the way the public consumes music.
One way upcoming artists slowly gain way into the spotlight is by utilizing social media by posting freestyles and covers of songs as a way to showcase their vocal abilities.
While some have succeeded using freestyle, there are others who quickly earned themselves lucrative contracts with some established artists by posting a cover of their song.

Here are the Nigerian Artists who got signed after making a cover of a song
Mayorkun
Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, also known as Mayorkun, got his big break in the music industry when he was signed to Davido’s record label, DMW, years ago.
Many people are unaware that the ‘Mama‘ singer was a ‘Instagram artiste,’ recording covers of popular songs whenever he pleased.
Good fortune came his way when he chose to create a cover of Davido’s smash song ‘The Money,’ which featured Olamide. OBO was apparently impressed by his efforts, as he contacted him and signed him as one of his first artists on the same day as Dremo.
In 2016, and 2018, the singer won multiple honours, including the Headies’ ‘Rookie of the Year’ and ‘Next Rated’ awards.
Rema
Prior to his stardom, Divine Ikubor, also known as Rema, was an underground artist who began making music in his secondary school days.
His big break occurred in 2018 when his cover of D’Prince’s song “Gucci Gang,” which he put on Instagram, went viral.
D Prince saw the video and flew him to Lagos to give him a record deal, subsequently signing him to his label, Jonzing Record, a Mavin Records subsidiary.
Just before his public debut, the boy had been with the record label for about a year, undergoing training that would prepare him for a successful career and stardom.
Even after landing a deal and becoming famous, Rema’s culture or practice of freestyling in his vehicle has continued.
Joeboy
Joeboy’s music career began when he was 16 years old, and he released his first track, Gbeseyin, an Afrobeat song, the following year.
In 2017, he recorded a rendition of Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, which went viral in Nigeria and around the world.
Mr Eazi discovered Joeboy’s incredible vocals and made him the first musician to get support from his music philanthropic initiative, emPawa Africa.
Joeboy recorded a song called “Faaji” with the support of emPawa Africa and Mr Eazi, which did well, but it was his 2019 love song “Baby” that catapulted him to mainstream popularity.

Terri
Another social media success story is Terri who is signed to Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment.
In 2017, Terri covered DJ Jimmy Jatt’s hit ‘Oshe,’ which featured Wizkid.
He covered the song and tagged as many A-list artists, record labels, and producers as he could think of, just like every other aspiring artist.
To cut a long tale short, Wizkid was drawn to his page and enjoyed his freestyle. The next thing you know, he’s on ‘Soco‘ and has officially signed with Starboy. He also released his debut track, ‘Bia,’ under the label.
